1. @Miki ISODA, Makoto FUKUMA, and Akira HARATA, Ultraviolet-Excitation Photothermal Heterodyne Interferometer as a Micro-HPLC Detector, Analytical Sciences, 10.2116/analsci.19P190, 35, 12, 1311-1315, 2019.12, The first demonstration of a photothermal heterodyne interferometer (PHI) combined with micro-HPLC (high-performance liquid chromatography) is reported. A semiconductor laser (375 nm) was used for excitation, and the temperature change caused by heat released from photoexcited species was detected with a He–Ne laser (632.8 nm). The temperature-dependent refractive index change of the solvent modified the optical path of the probe beam. The phase difference between two arms of the interferometer, one passing through the heated sample and another as a reference, was sensitively detected with the PHI. The nitro-polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon and vitamin mixture separated via micro-HPLC was successfully detected with the PHI as well as a UV detector. The detection limit of the PHI for riboflavin in the absorbance units was 77 times better than that of the commercial UV detector. The detection limit of the PHI with a small flow cell (6 nL) was the same as that with a large flow cell (18 nL) for 1-nitropyrene..
2. Fatin Hazwani M. Azahar, Sourav Mitra, Akihiro Yabushita, Akira Harata, Bidyut Baran Saha, Thu Kyaw, Improved model for the isosteric heat of adsorption and impacts on the performance of heat pump cycles, Applied Thermal Engineering, 10.1016/j.applthermaleng.2018.07.131, 143, 688-700, 2018.10, The isosteric heat of adsorption strongly associates with the energetics of the adsorption processes. Being a direct function of the uptake amount, accurate modelling of the isosteric heat of adsorption is crucial in the design and development of adsorption systems. The isosteric heat of adsorption is often calculated using the Clausius-Clayperon equation with the perfect gas assumption and negligible adsorbed phase volume. We present a thermodynamic model of the isosteric heat of adsorption that addresses the non-ideal behaviour and the variation in the adsorbed phase density. The model is first validated using experimental data in comparison with the available models in the literature that invoke the ideal gas assumption with negligible adsorbed phase volume. Using these models, the isosteric heat for adsorption processes is examined from partial vacuum to high pressure as well as adsorption temperatures above the critical point. The impact of the prediction by each model on the system performance is then assessed in terms of the theoretical COP. For the realistic evaluation of system COP, an improved equilibrium cycle model is developed and the system performance is investigated using various models for the isosteric heat of adsorption. For adsorption at partial vacuum conditions, the COP values predicted by the ideal model are up to 1.8% higher when compared to the calculations using the present model. For high-pressure adsorption below the critical temperature, for example, Maxsorb III + R134a pair, the present model predicts 13% lower COP than the models available in the literature. The variation in the adsorbed phase density addressed in the present model leads to a higher value of isosteric heat (3.8%–8.6%) for adsorption above the critical temperature..

formation yields from different States of CO adsorbed on amorphous solid water under 157nm photoirradiation, Chemistry Letters, 10.1246/cl.171121, 47, 4, 468-471, 2018.01, There are two different adsorption States of CO on amorphous solid water (ASW): one adsorption state consists of CO interacting with non-hydrogen-bonded (dangling) OH, while the other consists of CO interacting with bonded OH. Photoirradiation onto ASW at 157 nm induces CO
2
formation through the reaction of CO with OH, where OH originates from the photodissociation of H

O ice. The preferential formation of CO

would explain the missing infrared CO band in the observation of interstellar ice particles..
4. Miki Sato, Yuki Maeda, Toshio Ishioka, Akira Harata, Photoionization of environmentally polluting aromatic chlorides and nitrides on the water surface by laser and synchrotron radiations, The Analyst, 10.1039/c7an01311f, 142, 23, 4560-4569, 2017.12, The detection limits and photoionization thresholds of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and their chlorides and nitrides on the water surface are examined using laser two-photon ionization and single-photon ionization, respectively. The laser two-photon ionization methods are highly surface-selective, with a high sensitivity for aromatic hydrocarbons tending to accumulate on the water surface in the natural environment due to their highly hydrophobic nature. The dependence of the detection limits of target aromatic molecules on their physicochemical properties (photoionization thresholds relating to excess energy, molar absorptivity, and the octanol-water partition coefficient) is discussed. The detection limit clearly depends on the product of the octanol-water partition coefficient and molar absorptivity, and no clear dependence was found on excess energy. The detection limits of laser two-photon ionization for these types of molecules on the water surface are formulated..
