77. T. Wakasa, K. Ogata, and T. Noro, Proton-induced knockout reactions with polarized and unpolarized beams, Prog. Part. Nucl. Phys., 2017.06, Proton-induced knockout reactions provide a direct means of studying the single particle or cluster structures of target nuclei. In addition, these knockout reactions are expected to play a unique role in investigations of the effects of the nuclear medium on nucleon– nucleon interactions as well as the properties of nucleons and mesons. However, due to the nature of hadron probes, these reactions can suffer significant disturbances from the nuclear surroundings and the quantitative theoretical treatment of such processes can also be challenging. In this article, we review the experimental and theoretical progress in this field, particularly focusing on the use of these reactions as a spectroscopic tool and as a way to examine the medium modification of nucleon–nucleon interactions. With regard to the former aspect, the review presents a semi-quantitative evaluation of these reactions based on existing experimental data. In terms of the latter point, we introduce a significant body of evidence that suggests, although does not conclusively prove, the existence of medium effects. In addition, this paper also provides information and comments on other related subjects..

Sakemi, Complete set of polarization transfer observables for the O-16((p)over-right-arrow, (n)over-right-arrow) F-16 reaction at 296 MeV and 0 degrees, PHYSICAL REVIEW C, 10.1103/PhysRevC.84.014614, Vol.84, No.1, 2011.07, We report measurements of the cross section and a complete set of polarization transfer observables for the O-16((p) over right arrow,(n) over right arrow) F-16 reaction at a bombarding energy of T-p = 296 MeV and a reaction angle of theta(lab) = 0 degrees. The data are compared with distorted-wave impulse approximation calculations employing the large configuration-space shell-model (SM) wave functions. The well-known Gamow-Teller and spin-dipole (SD) states at excitation energies of E-x less than or similar to 8 MeV have been reasonably reproduced by the calculations except for the spin-parity J(pi) = 2(-) state at E-x = 5.86 MeV. The SD resonance at E-x similar or equal to 9.5 MeV appears to have more J(pi) = 2(-)strength than J(pi) = 1(-) strength, consistent with the calculations. The data show significant strength in the spin-longitudinal polarized cross section I D-L (0 degrees) at E-x similar or equal to 15 MeV, which indicates the existence of the J(pi) = 0(-) SD resonance as predicted in the SM calculations..

Nogga, Three nucleon force effects in intermediate-energy deuteron analyzing powers for dp elastic scattering, PHYSICAL REVIEW C, 10.1103/PhysRevC.83.061001, Vol.83, No.6, 2011.06, A complete high precision set of deuteron analyzing powers for elastic deuteron- proton (dp) scattering at 250 MeV/nucleon (MeV/N) has been measured. The new data are presented together with data from previous measurements at 70, 100, 135 and 200 MeV/N. They are compared with the results of three- nucleon (3N) Faddeev calculations based on modern nucleon- nucleon (NN) potentials alone or combined with two models of three nucleon forces (3NFs): the Tucson-Melbourne 99 (TM99) and Urbana IX. At 250 MeV/N large discrepancies between pure NN models and data, which are not resolved by including 3NFs, were found at c. m. backward angles of theta(c.m). greater than or similar to 120 degrees for almost all the deuteron analyzing powers. These discrepancies are quite similar to those found for the cross section at the same energy. We found small relativistic effects that cannot resolve the discrepancies with the data indicating that other, short- ranged 3NFs are required to obtain a proper description of the data..
95. Spin-dipole strengths and tensor correlation effects for ${}^{208}{
m Pb}(p,n)$ at 295 MeV
We performed the multipole decomposition analysis (MDA) for the ${}^{208}{
m

Pb}(p,n)$ data in order to obtain the spin-dipole (SD) strengths separated into

each $Delta J^{pi}$ contribution $dB({
m SD}_{Delta

J^{pi } };omega)/domega$.

The random phase approximation (RPA calculations reproduce the total SD

strength reasonably well, whereas some discrepancies are found for separated SD

strength.

The centroids of the resonances are slightly lower and higher than the

theoretical predictions for $1^-$ and $2^-$, respectively.

These softening and hardening effects observed in $1^-$ an....

The polarization transfer observables are used to deduce the spin-longitudinal cross section, IDq, and spin-transverse cross sections, IDp and IDn. The data are compared with calculations based on the distorted-wave impulse approximation (DWIA) using shell-model wave functions. Significant differences between the experimental and theoretical results are observed for all three spin-dependent IDi at momentum transfers of q greater than or similar to 0.5 fm(-1), suggesting the existence of nuclear correlations beyond the shell model. We also performed DWIA calculations employing random-phase approximation (RPA) response functions and found that the observed discrepancy is partly resolved by the pionic and rho-mesonic correlation effects..

The energy transfer spectra for He-3(p, n) at large theta(lab) (>= 16 degrees) are dominated by quasielastic contributions and can be reasonably reproduced by plane-wave impulse approximation (PWIA) calculations for quasielastic scattering. By contrast, the known L = 1 resonances in Li-4 are clearly observed near the threshold in the He-4(p, n) spectra. Because these contributions are remarkable at small angles, the energy spectra are significantly different from those expected for quasielastic scattering. The data are compared with the PWIA calculations, and it is found that the quasielastic contributions are dominant at large theta(lab) (>= 22 degrees). The nuclear correlation effects on the quasielastic peak for He-4(p, n) are also discussed..

The data are compared with the corresponding free nucleon-nucleon values on the basis of the predominance of quasielastic scattering processes. Significant discrepancies have been observed in the polarization transfer D-LL(0 degrees), which are presumably the result of the three-proton T = 3/2 resonance. The spin-parity of the resonance is estimated to be 1/2(-), and the distribution is consistent with previous results obtained for the same reaction at T-p = 48.8 MeV..

a beam energy of 390 MeV and the dependence on both the pion emission angle and

The measured polarization transfer observables indicate that the spin-dipole resonance at E-x similar or equal to 7 MeV has greater 2(-) strength than 1(-) strength, which is consistent with recent experimental and theoretical studies. The total spin transfer Sigma(0 degrees) deduced from the polarization transfer observables indicates a predominance of the spin-flip strength in the continuum. The exchange tensor interaction at a large momentum transfer of Q similar or equal to 3.6 fm(-1) is discussed..

The cross section is significantly under-predicted by the calculations at momentum transfers q greater than or similar to 0.5 fm(-1). The discrepancy is partly resolved by considering the non-locality of the nuclear mean field. However, the calculations still under-predict the cross section at large momentum transfers of q similar or equal to 1.6 fm(-1). We also performed calculations employing random phase approximation response functions and found that the observed enhancement can be attributed in part to pionic correlations in nuclei. Near the 4c alpha breakup threshold of 14.4 MeV, a broad peak is observed at an excitation energy of 13.6 +/- 0.1 MeV with a width of 0.6 +/- 0.2 MeV. The spin-parity is estimated to be 0(+) from the momentum-transfer dependence. The observed width is significantly larger than that of the 0(+) state at 12.0 MeV with the alpha + C-12 structure, indicating a well-developed a cluster structure. The magnitude of the cross section is sensitive to the density distribution of the constituent alpha clusters. The observed cross section is consistent with the theoretical prediction for the a cluster condensed state, characterized by its dilute density distribution with a large root-mean-square radius. The Landau-Migdal (LM) parameters, g(NN)(') and g(N Delta)('), are estimated by comparing the calculations with recent experimental data. The peak of the GT resonance and the pionic response functions below the QES peak constrain g(NN)('), whereas the quenching of the GT total strength and the enhanced pionic strength around the QES peak provide information about g(N Delta)('). We obtained g(NN)(')=0.6 +/- 0.1 and g(N Delta)(')=0.35 +/- 0.16 at q=0 fm(-1) and g(NN)(')=0.7 +/- 0.1 and g(N Delta)(')=0.3 +/- 0.1 at q approximate to 1.7 fm(-1). These results indicate that the q dependence of the LM parameters is weak..

The NPOL3 system consists of three planes of neutron detectors. The first two planes for neutron polarization analysis are made of 20 sets of one-dimensional position-sensitive plastic scintillation counters with a size of 100 cm x 10 cm x 5 cm, and they cover the area of 100 x 100 cm(2). The last plane for detecting doubly scattered neutrons or recoiled protons is made of the two-dimensional position-sensitive liquid scintillation counter with a size of 100 cm, x 100 cm x 10 cm. The effective analyzing powers A(yeff) and double scattering efficiencies epsilon(D.S.) were measured by using the three kinds of polarized neutrons from the H-2(p, n)pp, Li-6(p, n)Be-6(g.s.), and C-12(p, n)N-12(g.s.) reactions at T-P = 198 MeV. The performance of NPOL3 defined as epsilon(D.S.)(A(yeff))(2) are similar to that of the Indiana Neutron POLarimeter by taking into account for the counter configuration difference between these two neutron polarimeters. A multipole decomposition technique was applied to the present data as well as the previously obtained 90Zr(p, n) data to extract the Gamow-Teller (GT) component from the continuum. The GT quenching factor Q was derived by using the obtained total GT strengths. The result is Q = 0.88 +/- 0.06, not including an overall normalization uncertainty in the GT unit cross section of 16%. (c) 2005 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved..

The measured B-11(He-3,t) cross sections were compared with the results of the distorted-wave impulse-approximation (DWIA) calculation, and the Gamow-Teller (GT) strengths for low-lying states in C-11 were determined. The GT strengths were converted to the isovector spin-flip M1 strengths using the isobaric analog relations under the assumption of the isospin symmetry. The isoscalar spin-flip M1 strengths were obtained from the (d,d(')) analysis by assuming that the shape of the collective transition form factor with the same DeltaJ(pi) is similar in the B-11(d,d(')) and C-12(d,d(')) reactions. The obtained isovector and isoscalar strengths were used in the DWIA calculations for the B-11(p,p(')) reaction. The DWIA calculation reasonably well explains the present B-11(p,p(')) result. However, the calculated cross section for the 8.92-MeV 3/2(2)(-) state was significantly smaller than the experimental values. The transition strengths obtained in the shell-model calculations were found to be 20-50 % larger than the experimental strengths. The transition strengths for the neutrino induced reactions were estimated by using the isovector and isoscalar spin-flip M1 strengths. The present results are quantitatively in agreement with the theoretical estimation discussing the axial isoscalar coupling in the neutrino scattering process, and are useful in the measurement of the stellar neutrinos using the neutral- and charged-current reactions on B-11..

The band members were observed in Al-25 at excitation energies of 6-7.5 MeV in a high-resolution Mg-25(He-3,t) charge-exchange reaction at 0degrees having a strong selectivity for Gamow-Teller transitions. The Gamow-Teller (GT) transitions from the J(pi) = 5/2(+) ground state of Mg-25 to the excited states in Al-25 were studied by high-resolution measurements of the Mg-25(He-3,t) charge-exchange reaction at 0degrees and at 140 MeV/nucleon. Assuming the usual DeltaJ(pi) = 1(+) selection rule for the spin-isospin-type GT transitions, the states with J(pi) = 3/2(+), 5/2(+), and 7/2 (+) should be excited. However, of the more than ten states with these J(pi) values below 6 MeV excitation energy, only the 5/2 (+) ground state and the 7/2 (+) , 1.613 MeV state in Al-25 were strongly populated, while all other states were strongly suppressed. The analysis of M1 transitions in Mg-25 also suggested a very similar feature for the analogous M1 transitions. Both Mg-25 and Al-25 are known to be largely deformed, and most low-lying states can be interpreted in terms of one-particle quantum numbers in the deformed potential and the associated rotational spectra. The observed suppression can be explained in terms of the K quantum number selection rules that are inherent to axially deformed nuclei..
