Explanations are given about various standard items concerning water quality. These are the decision-making standards that apply when measures must be taken. In addition, methods to reduce the pollution burden of water, as well as methods to encourage natural purification, are introduced. The water monitoring condition, current condition of water quality, and improvement in water quality in the past 40 years are shown. At the same time, a description is given of problems that will be encountered when proceeding with aquatic habitat preservation from now on..

These abilities are fundamental to identifying the core essence of economic and ecological interdependence, to look at and analyze problems from an overarching perspective, and to consider countermeasures to be taken. Each chapter of this book corresponds to a lecture in the East Asia Environmental Strategist Training Program at Kyushu University and is excellent reading as a sourcebook..

4.	久場隆広, 郝愛民, 井芹寧, 張振家, 太湖流域における水環境の保全に関する研究 (九州大学東アジア環境研究機構 RIEAE叢書VIII、編著水環境グループ), 花書院, 「第2章　中国太湖流域の水環境の保全と再生を考える／久場隆広･郝愛民･井芹寧･張振家」、pp.57-119, 2015.03, [URL], 中国は近年急速に経済が発展しており、特に太湖を中心とする上海エリアは中国の経済活動の中心的なエリアであり重要な地域となっている。太湖の水を利用する人は３０００万人を超え、太湖の水質劣化により上水道や工業用水に影響が生じており、市民の健康への影響も懸念されている。同時に、生物多様性保持の観点から「健康」な湖への回復が急がれている。太湖及びその周辺の水域は、多くの生物が生息し、自然の湖岸帯、河川も残っている。現時点で自然環境に対して保全措置を講ずれば、将来、健全な生態系が維持できる可能性が極めて高いと考えられる。九州大学では東アジア環境問題研究の一環として２００９年より水環境グループを立ち上げ太湖および太湖に流入する河川の水環境保全の研究を実施した。第2章　中国太湖流域の水環境の保全と再生を考える中国の急速な経済発展は何をもたらしたか？中国の経済はいまだに急速な成長を続けている。一人当たり名目ＧＤＰ（国内総生産）は決して高い水準にあるとは言えないものの、２〇１４年の名目ＧＤＰは１〇兆ドル余りで、アメリカに次いで世界第二位である。１９７〇年代後半以降、市場経済を志向した経済改革を続け、今日の経済規模は当時の十倍程度にまで達したと言われる。個人の収入や消費も増加を続け、市民の平均的な生活水準は向上した一方で、「農民工」（都市で働く農民戸籍を持つ農民）や「三農」（農村・農業・農民）、流動人口といった社会問題に代表されるように、経済発展を続ける沿岸部を中心とする都市と貧困地帯である内陸部との経済格差が拡大している。.
