About Zhou Bida’s Ouyang Wenzhong gong ji Compilation
Zhou Bida (1126–1204) of the Chinese Southern Song period undertook compilation of the 153-volume collection of Ouyang Wenzhong gong ji 120 years after the Northern Song writer Ouyang Xiu (1007–72) passed away. Zhou Bida took six years to complete the compilation, and in this presentation, we comprehensively examine the entire compilation process. We address the situation of various books related to Ouyang Xiu that existed before the compilation’s initiation, members of the compilation team, their roles, the parts they were in charge of, and the other materials that they relied on by analyzing the various sources in detail . In addition, we clarify that the portions of the manuscript completed by Zhou Bida were successively sent for printing and publishing and that Zhou Bida had been collecting and studying Ouyang Xiu’s works prior to the compilation. In this way, Zhou Bida’s compilation process for the 153-volume Ouyang Wenzhong gong ji is examined from various angles and comprehensively described.
