Finding solutions through a single discipline is not possible. Students need to confront social problems which can be solved by a wide range of knowledges, technologies and skills from a variety of disciplines. Therefore, we consider that the current society requires smart creative leaders with broad perspectives and knowledgeable eyes. Kyushu University launched the School of Interdisciplinary Science and Innovation in 2018. This brand new school is a new faculty to foster a wide range of knowledge and highly advanced communication skills beyond disciplinary boundaries. It cultivates professionals who can appropriately identify challenges with a broad perspective and knowledge, flexibly learn from others' insights and capabilities, and take initiative in transdisciplinary work with high-level communication proficiency. We aim to foster professionals who can contribute to society and draw a picture of a bright future. We will introduce our structured curriculum to design collaborative learning and nurture interdisciplinary problem-solving skills from our school’s education system..

Ueno, Xuchun Qiu, Yuji Oshima , Alternation of sound production in Japanese medaka, Oryzias latipes exposed to environmental toxicants, 19th International Symposium on Toxicity Assessment, 2019.08, We previously reported that the Japanese medaka (Oryzias latipes) is a sonic fish and produces stable sounds on a regular basis (average interpulse intervals; approx 0.2 s) under normal conditions. In this study, we investigated the responses of sound production, such as the number and interpulse intervals of sound production, to various environmental toxicants. If abnormal changes in sound production were linked with toxic chemical exposure, we would consider to extend this monitoring method to the application of biological monitoring for water quality.
We conducted three different kinds of exposure test with the carbamate insecticide (aldicarb), heavy-metal compound (copper sulfate) and benzodiazepine pharmaceutical (diazepam). In aldicarb and copper sulfate exposure test, fish were exposed at four concentrations (aldicarb: 0, 0.25, 0.5, and 1 mg/L; copper sulfate: 0, 0.5, 1, and 2 mg/L), and sound characteristics were monitored for 5 hours after exposure. The nominal concentrations of diazepam (0, 0.01, 0.03, 0.1, 0.3, 1 and 3 mg/L) for 48 hours exposure test was selected on the basis of the results of the preliminary toxicity test. After the exposure tests, we analyzed the number and interpulse interval of sound in medaka fish.
In aldicarb exposure test, the average interpulse interval was significantly longer and reached a length of more than 0.3 s during the recording periods. In copper exposure test, most medaka fish stopped to produce sound at 1 mg/L and 2 mg/L, resulting in significantly declined number of sound pulses. Relatively shortened interpulse intervals of sound production were observed in medaka fish exposed to 0.5 mg/L copper sulfate. Exposure to diazepam induced the significant declined number of sound pulses in 0.3, 1 and 3 mg/L groups. However, we found no notable change in interpulse intervals of sound in medaka fish exposed to diazepam.
From these results, it was suggested that monitoring the acoustic alternations of Japanese medaka has potential to detect water accidents in water resources. It can be concluded that further studies should be done concerning toxic chemicals at environmentally relevant levels on sound production in medaka fish to facilitate the application of sound production in water-quality monitoring and early warning systems..
