The survey by the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare showed suicide to be the leading cause of death for Japanese in their 20s, and enacting mental health measures for young people such as university students is an urgent issue. As a mental health measure aimed at the youth, we have launched the project entitled "the empirical study on the improvement in mental health of university students using a smartphone app". In this project, we first conducted a questionnaire survey about healthcare smartphone apps among university freshmen (N=64). When we asked whether a mental health check app was necessary for a university student, 46.9% in total of all respondents answered "very necessary" or "necessary". On the other hand, 28.1% in total answered "very necessary" or "necessary" when we asked whether it was necessary for the respondents themselves. Then, we conducted a preliminary experiment using a prototype app (N=20). Of the students who used the prototype app, 85.0% answered "very necessary" or "necessary" to a question about the necessity of a mental health check app for university students, while the students who answered "very necessary" or "necessary" accounted for 55.0% regarding its necessity for the respondents themselves. We speculate that the prototype users could imagine what a mental health app was like since they actually used the prototype and this helped the students understand its necessity. Although we mostly obtained favorable responses about the usability of this prototype app in the questionnaire, the log analysis results showed that some of the app functions were unused. We plan to use the results of this preliminary experiment to improve the app for future use.
