4. A Neonatal Case of Cervical Hemangioma With Kasabach-Merritt Syndrome
A 17-day-old boy was admitted to our department for treatment of a gradually enlarging dark-red mass located in the left submandibular region. At admission, the platelet count was 1.6×10^4/μl and showed thrombocytopenia. The biopsy of the tumor revealed capillary hemangioma. The child was diagnosed as having a submandibular hemangioma with Kasabach-Merritt syndrome, and initially treated with platelet transfusion, steroid therapy and radiotherapy; however, these treatments resulted in failure. At the age of 129 days, he underwent 70-80% resection of the hemangioma. Just after the operation, the thrombocytopenia improved, and the remaining tumor gradually shrank. Kasabach-Merritt syndrome is a rare condition, and a high mortality rate is reported when it occurs in neonates. We report a neonatal case of Kasabach-Merritt syndrome that was successfully treated with subtotal resection..
