In PrPb3, the quadrupolar ordering temperature at T-Q = 0.4 K rises by Delta T = 10 mK at P = 0.66 GPa. In Pr0.97La0.03Pb3, in which the quadrupolar ordering disappears by the La substitution, the specific heat C varies with increasing pressure. C/T below 0.3 K is nearly constant at low pressures, while C/T increases gradually with decreasing temperature at P=0.88 GPa. These results can be explained by the pressure dependence of the intersite interaction between the Gamma(3) moments and that of the interaction between the Gamma(3) moments and the conduction electrons..

We attempted to prepare a new type of CeCu6 by melting alpha-Ce and Cu under high pressure using the characteristic pressure-temperature phase diagram of Ce. The samples were prepared at high pressure and high temperature. The electrical resistance and specific heat were measured. It is found that the temperature dependence of the electrical resistance of newly prepared CeCu6 (alpha-CeCu6) shows a similar behavior as CeCu6 prepared at ambient pressure and high temperature although with a difference at low temperature below 30 K. According to the result of specific heat, it is suggested that alpha-CeCu6 is in the heavy fermion state..

The magnetic susceptibility measurements indicate that a ground-state doublet is achieved within a molecule when the temperature is cooled down to about 60 K from 300 K, giving the effective spin value of each molecule at lower temperatures to be S=12. Below 60 K, the magnetic susceptibility increases ferromagnetically down to 1 K, being followed by an antiferromagnetic decrease at lower temperatures. The analyses of the magnetic field dependence of heat capacity and magnetization reveals that the intermolecular ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic interactions are working with the respective value 2 zf Jf kB =6.0 K and 2 zaf Jaf kB =-1.35 K, which reasonably explains the observed value of the transition temperature TN (0) =0.74 K at the field H=0 T: It is suggested that organic magnets order at the temperature predicted by Rushbrooke-Wood for isotropic Heisenberg spin systems, including not only the present tri-radical system, but also to the most typical genuine organic ferromagnets of mono-radical (S=12) and biradical (S=1). A fully mapped temperature-magnetic field phase boundary is obtained to be described by a single formula TN (H) = TN (0) [1- (H Hc) a] ξ with the values TN (0) =0.735 K, Hc =1.01±0.01 T, a=2.05±0.02, and ξ=0.48+0.01, where Hc =2 Hex =2×2 zaf Jaf S g μB, without any trace of the existence of the bicritical point on it as seen in normal antiferromagnets with uniaxial anisotropy. It is discussed that the critical indices may be a=2.0 and ξ=0.5 for nonfrustrated antiferromagnets with infinitesimally small anisotropy. © 2005 The American Physical Society..

It has been considered that the 4f electrons in Pr ion change from the localized to itinerant states across the transition. In order to investigate the electronic state of the phase IV, we performed the high pressure electrical resistivity measurement using the diamond anvil cell (DAC) up to 32 GPa. In the Pr-IV phase, the resistivity shows an upward curvature, which suggests the narrow energy band of the itinerant 4f electrons near Fermi energy. At higher temperature side of the Pr-IV phase, the resistivity shows a small hump-like anomaly at T-0. (c) 2005 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved..

We have performed neutron diffraction experiments on PrPb3 in order to detect a possible induced antiferromagnetic (AFM) moment in the AFQ phase. At T = 40 mK, a small magnetic reflection q = (1/2 delta delta) with delta = 0.062 is observed above 3T. The emergence of the magnetic reflection is accompanied by a large hysteresis, implying the transition to be of first order. The direction of the AFM component (parallel to[110]) suggests an underlying AFQ order of O-2(2) type. (c) 2005 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved..

From the extrapolation of H vs. T phase diagram to 0 K, the lower and the upper critical fields are expected to be about 3 and 7 T, respectively. The phase boundary is almost symmetric with respect to a horizontal line of H = 5 T. This behavior is consistent with the previously observed magnetization measurement in which magnetization began to increase at about 3 T and saturated at about 7 T. (C) 2003 Elsevier Science B.V. (Phys. Rev. B 57 (1998) 5200). Within our experimental range of hydrostatic pressure up to about 1 GPa, we did not observe any anomaly indicating the three-dimensional magnetic long range ordering and the quantum phase transition. The paramagnetic contribution in the susceptibility chi' of the Zn-doped system increases with increasing x below the gap temperature. The susceptibility obeys the Curie law in the temperature range between 0.5 K and 2 K. However, at temperatures below 0.5 K, chi'T drops with decreasing temperature, which suggests the crossover in the Curie constant as predicted by Sigrist and Furusaki [J. Phys. Sec. Jpn. 65 (1996) 2385]. Magnetization curves of the Zn-doped system are compared with that of the pure system. The impurity-induced spin behaves like a paramagnetic S=1/2 spin and the spin-gap state survives even in the Zn-doped system with the content x up to 0.117. These results seem to originate from the weak interladder interaction of the system..

The transition temperature T-C(p) in the ferromagnetic state decreases as T-C(p) = T-C(p(0))(1 + ap) for pressures p less than or equal to p(c) = 6.5 +/- 0.5 kbar [T-C(p(0)) = 0.61 K, a = -0.048 (kbar(-1))]. For p > p(c), however, experiment demonstrates intrinsically the existence of an antiferromagnetic state as well as a pressure-induced enhancement of T-C(p) with a = 0.004 (kbar(-1)). The results are discussed within the context of theories derived from the unrestricted Hartree-Fock approximation..

At low temperatures below 1.2 K, the paramagnetic susceptibility expected in the Haldane system with the open chain is found to be suppressed, A broad maximum of the heat capacity is observed around 0.7 K for each impurity system. The observed results strongly suggest that there exists an antiferromagnetic interaction between the edge S = 1/2 spins adjacent to Zn2+ ions via the next-nearest exchange interaction J(nn) which can be regarded as a bond impurity in the Haldane system. This is the first experiment on bond impurity models for the Haldane system..

The anomalous temperature dependence of the weak ferromagnetism at low temperatures is qualitatively explained by a four-sublattice model with two kinds of Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya (D-M) vectors of opposite sign on the ac-plane. The staggered susceptibility, which is a fictitious but intrinsic quantity for antiferromagnets, is estimated in TOV by making use of the canted weak ferromagnetic moments which dominate below 6 It. Especially the rapid growth of the magnetic susceptibility below 6 K is explained by the staggered susceptibility which makes the crossover effect from 2D Heisenberg to 2D Ising system, triggered by above the D-M anisotropy..

For each impure system, magnetic susceptibility is described by the sum of two contributions; one is from the Haldane state and the other is a paramagnetic contribution. The latter contribution increases proportionally with impurity concentration. For 1D system shortened by Zn2+ impurity ions, the paramagnetic contribution obeys the Curie law, and its absolute value of the susceptibility is found to amount nearly 40% of the theoretical estimation for the VBS model where the spin with its value S = 1/2 appears at the both edges of 1D segments. In the case for the system with Cu2+ impurity ions, the paramagnetic contribution is much smaller than the results for the Zn2+ impure systems. This reduction of the magnetic moment of Cu2+ ion for S = 1/2 is qualitatively different from the case for the enhanced moment of Cu2+ ion in the anisotropic S = 1 Heisenberg antiferromagnet NENP..

The characteristic field dependence of the magnetic heat capacity of this crystal is quantitatively explained by the theoretical values derived from the Bethe-ansatz technique applied to the quantum transfer matrix, with a unique intrachain exchange constant J/k(B)=5.5 K. By the simultaneous measurement of magnetic susceptibility and heat capacity, the three-dimensional ordering at T-c=0.21 K, which is triggered by a weak interchain coupling zJ'/k(B)=3 x 10(-2) K, is confirmed..

However, there is no sign of the superfluid transition of He-3 quasiparticles in the solution. In the sub-millikelvin region, we have measured the thermal boundary resistance between the solutions and sintered metal powder as a function of temperature T We find that the thermal boundary resistence is proportional to T-2 below 1 mK and that the resistance shows a strong dependence on magnetic fields below 0.1 T. These results suggest that the magnetic coupling is dominant in this temperature region. We have also estimated the heat leak into the dilute solution. It is found that the heat leak is proportional to the power of one third of inverse time, and the main source of the heat leak is ascribed to the viscous movement of He-3 quasiparticles..
